4GD is upgrading the capabilities of its SimStriker intelligent target by improving its behaviour and response to trainee actions through the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Following a contract award in 2022 4GD is currently installing 10 SimStrikers in the urban operations training SmartFacility it has provided at the British Army's 16 Air Assault Brigade's base in Colchester.
Speaking to Janes, James Crowley, 4GD business development director, said the installation should be complete by the end of October.
SimStriker is a humanoid-shaped target fitted with six hit-zone sensors for use with non-ballistic ammunition, enabling the facility to collect details of hit accuracy. Currently, the target can react to various triggers with different responses. The triggers, which can be adjusted for sensitivity, are the hit from a fired weapon; noise using an acoustic sensor; and motion and light using a camera inside the head. These sensors will filter out background effects from the immersive environment generated by the system, differentiating between facility-generated effects and those caused by trainees.
The target's responses are audio, producing a recorded voice; shoot back, with an Airsoft weapon fitted in the target abdomen; and movement – the target can swivel up to 270° and will drop vertically when hit.
