Overview Of Russian Strikes In Ukraine On May 22, 2023
On the night of May 22, new wave of Russian strikes targeted Ukrainian military facilities throughout the country. Explosions again thundered in several regions in southern, eastern and central Ukraine. Kiev is hiding the losses as always.
Last night, explosions thundered in the Kharkiv, Odessa, Zaporozhie, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk region. Russian forces used kamikaze UAVs, cruise and ballistic missiles.
The first Russian strikes hit targets in the Kharkiv region. According to preliminary reports, the headquarters of the Ukrainian Nazi battalion “Kraken” was destroyed. Several militants were killed. The total number of casualties is yet to be revealed.
The Russian aerospace forces attacked the targets of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Kherson region. At least one guided bomb hit Ukrainian military base near the village of Kizomys.
On the morning of May 22, pro-Russian authorities in the Russian-controlled part of the Zaporozhie region confirmed that Russian aircraft hit Ukrainian warehouses with military equipment and ammunition in the Zaporozhie region. In particular, explosions were reported in the area of Orekhov.
The largest attack targeted the city of Dnipro in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The Russian military launched a powerful combined strike on the Ukrainian military facilities. About 20 explosions reportedly thundered in the area, including near the Yuzhmash plant. Russian cruise missiles X-101, X-22, ballistic missiles and Geran UAVs were used.
Ukrainian authorities admitted that military and infrastructure facilities in Dnepropetrovsk were attacked. The city was reportedly targeted by 16 missiles of various types and 20 UAVs.
The Ukrainian side claims that all drones were allegedly shot down, as well as 4 X-101/X-555 cruise missiles fired from the Caspian Sea.
The remaining 12 missiles hit their targets. The missiles reportedly included:
- 5 X-22 cruise missiles were fired from long-range Tu—22M3 bombers from different directions (the Sea of Azov and from the Kursk region);
- 2 Iskander-M ballistic missiles launched from Crimea;
- 5 S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles launched from the territory of the Zaporozhye region.
As a result of the attack, at least one large fire broke out in the area. Secondary detonation was reportedly heard in the city until early morning. The military warehouses of the AFU were likely destroyed.
Russian authorities in the Zaporozhie region reported that Russian precision strikes in the Dnipropetrovsk disrupted the transfer of a new batch of AFU fighters to the Zaporozhye front. The means of visual control and messages coming from local residents confirmed heavy losses in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to unconfirmed reports, Russian forces also hit military targets in Kiev. The capital was reportedly again targeted by Russian kamikaze UAVs. According to some reports, one of the drones hit an ammunition depot.
In its turn, Ukraine declared that the Russian Su-35 fighter was allegedly shot down by the air defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine over the Kherson region. According to Ukrainian media, the aircraft fell in the Black Sea.
The head of the press service of the Ukrainian Defense Forces of Kherson Dmitry Pletenchuk shared an emotional message :
The sight of the downed Su-35 was incredible. Air Defense – Strength! The evening became more interesting. – Pletenchuk wrote.
However, the message was soon deleted because the Ukrainian military denied the reports. It turned out that several Ukrainian anti-aircraft missiles were fired at the aircraft from different directions, but none of them reached it because of the maneuvers of the aircraft and its heat traps.
