Ukraine Attacks Crimea With 20 Drones To Make Up For Heavy Losses On T…
Kiev forces attacked the Crimean Peninsula with 20 suicide drones early on August 12, after suffering heavy losses on the front.
In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that the attack was thwarted with air defenses and electronic warfare means.
“Last night, Russian forces thwarted the Kiev regime’s attempt to carry out a terrorist attack on the Crimean Peninsula using 20 unmanned aerial vehicles,” the ministry said, adding that the attack caused no casualties or damage.
According to the ministry, 14 suicide drones were destroyed by air defenses systems and another six were jammed by electronic warfare means.
The drone attack was the most recent in a series of attempts by Kiev forces to target the Crimea. In July, an attack with naval drones severely damaged a roadway section of the Crimean Bridge linking the peninsula to mainland Russia. The attack killed a Russian married couple and injured their teenage daughter. Later in the month, the peninsula was targeted with 25 suicide drones.
Kiev forces launched the new attack after sustaining heavy human and material losses in different directions during the past day.
In the South Donetsk direction, the Russian Vostok Group of Forces destroyed two Ukrainian drone control centers near Marfopol and Chervonoye.
“Combat unmanned aerial vehicles were used to destroy the Ukrainian armed forces’ drone control centers in the Marfopol and Chervonoye areas,” a spokesman for the group said.
According to Chekhov, the group also wiped out a Strela-10 short-range air defense system to north of Konstantinovka settlement and targeted Ukrainian units to the northwest of Nikolskoye. In addition, the group’s Tor and Osa air defense systems shot down two Leleka reconnaissance drones.
Meanwhile in the Krasny Liman direction, the Russian Tsentr Group of Forces repelled six attacks near Chervonopopovsky and the Serebryansky forest. Kiev forces lost 50 troops, an infantry fighting vehicle and two armored vehicles during the fighting.
The group’s TOS-1A heavy multiple rocket launchers also targeted and destroyed a stronghold and two gatherings of Kiev forces in this direction.
Moreover, the artillery of the group destroyed D-20 and Msta-B towed howitzers with Lancet loitering munitions. A rocket strike also targeted a temporary deployment point close to Kirovsk. In addition, the group’s air defense systems intercepted four HIMARS and Uragan rockets.
Meanwhile, Russian news sources shared videos showing recent strikes against Ukrainian positions, equipment and troops in several directions.
Ukraine’s recent attacks on Russian territory appear to be an attempt to distract attention from the failure of the counteroffensive that was launched nearly ten weeks ago. So far, Kiev forces have sustained heavy losses and failed to make any meaningful gains.
