On August 3, the Russian military foiled an attempt by Kiev forces to target the Kaluga region with several suicide drones.

Kaluga’s governor Vladislav Shapsha said on his Telegram channel that six drones had been downed by air defenses in the southwest of the region. This was later confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defense.

“Early in the morning, we foiled an attempt by the Kiev regime to carry out a terrorist attack over the territory of the Kaluga region using drones. Air defense destroyed six drones,” the ministry said in a statement.

The Ukrainian attack attempt on Kaluga didn’t result in any casualties or material losses, according to the ministry’s statement.

The attack attempt came as Kiev forces continued to suffer losses in multiple directions. In the Kupyansk direction, Su-34 fighter bombers of the Russian Zapad Group of Forces carried out two airstrikes against a command center and a gathering of Ukraine’s 25th Separate Airborne Brigade near Berestovoye.

The group also foiled two attempts by Kiev forces to redeploy tactical reserves from the 25th Separate Airborne Brigade and the 32nd Separate Mechanised Brigade to forward positions near Berestovoye and Novosyolovskoye.

In addition, two attacks were repelled close to Les Popov. Kiev forces lost up to a platoon of infantry, a Ural truck and one mortar.

The artillery of the Zapad Group of Forces also destroyed two artillery systems, a 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzer near Peschanoye Nizhnee and a D-20 towed howitzer near the Volchy tract. A supply point near Kislovka was also hit by artillery fire.

Meanwhile in the Zaporozhye direction, the Russian military destroyed the personnel of three Ukrainian assault brigades which were preparing for an offensive, acting regional governor Yevgeny Balitsky said.

“Until four o’clock in the morning, the enemy was accumulating forces with a strength of three assault brigades for offensive operations in areas near the settlements of Malaya Tokmachka and Novopokrovka. The enemy forces were struck by artillery fire and the enemy actually lost the entire personnel of the brigades while those who survived scattered through the forest belt,” the governor wrote on his Telegram channel.

The Russian military also thwarted an attack by Kiev forces close Pyatikhatki in the Zaporozhye Region, according to the governor, who didn’t provide much details.

“Also, the enemy’s infantry was spotted near Pyatikhatki. The squad’s artillery struck the enemy, causing it to move back,” Balitsky said.

In another major blow to Kiev forces, a spokesman for the regional emergency services in the Kherson region announced that a German-made IRIS-T SLM air defense system was destroyed by the Russian military.

“Units of the Dnepr battlegroup destroyed an IRIS-T surface-to-air missile system near the settlement of Nadezhdovka in the Kherson direction as a result of inflicting damage by firepower,” the spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, the Russian military also destroyed 15 Ukrainian troops in three frontline sectors as well as a Msta-B towed howitzer with ammunition and a mortar along with its crew and ammunition.

Russian news sources shared a video showing the destruction of the IRIS-T system with a Lancet loitering munition. Other videos shared by the sources show strikes against three tanks, including a German-made Leopard 2, and an engineering vehicle.

The recent increase in attacks on Russian territory appears to be an attempt to deflect attention from the Ukrainian counteroffensive, which has so far failed to achieve any of its objectives.
