In Video: Syrian, Russian Forces Conduct Nighttime Military Exercise
The Russian military group in Syria and the elite 25th Special Mission Forces Division of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) had held a joint nighttime military exercise in the Hama governorate, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on August 3.
In a statement, the ministry said that the exercise mimicked an attack to liberate a settlement that was occupied by terrorists.
The joint attack began with a series of airstrikes by Su-35 fighter jets and Su-24 fighter bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces and artillery strikes by the SAA.
Russian Ka-52 attack helicopters destroyed armored vehicles and fortified firing positions of mock terrorists in the occupied settlement. This allowed the 25th Special Mission Forces Division, commonly known as the Tiger Forces, to carry out a tactical airborne landing in the operation zone.
Syrian troops landed from an altitude of 1,500-3,000 meters with weapons on Russian Arbalet-2 parachute systems and by assault using ropes from Mi-8AMTSH helicopters of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
The assault units using highly maneuverable vehicles and armored vehicles stormed the settlement and destroyed the mock terrorists who had captured it.
The ministry said that the military exercise was praised by the command of the Russian military group in Syria as well as senior officers from the SAA.
The 25th Special Mission Forces Division, which is commanded by renowned officer Suheil al-Hassan, is the most elite unit of the SAA. The unit is mainly trained and equipped by Russia. It participated in several joint exercises with the Russian military in the last few years.
The new joint military exercise came amid rising tensions with the United States, who recently expanded its aerial operations over Syria. It also came amid a military escalation in the northwestern region of Greater Idlib, which is occupied by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, and an increase of attacks by ISIS cells in the central region.
