  국가유산청(청장 최응천)은 국외소재문화유산재단(이사장 김정희, 이하 ‘국외재단’)과 함께 유럽 소재 한국 문화유산에 대한 조사·환수·활용 기능을 강화하기 위하여 프랑스 파리에 유럽 거점 사무소를 개설한다.

국외재단 유럽 거점 사무소는 9월 17일 프랑스 현지 개소식을 시작으로 운영되며, 이달 중 프랑스국립도서관(BNF)과의 업무협약을 체결하고 10월부터 프랑스국립도서관 소장 한국 고지도에 대한 조사를 추진할 예정이다. 또한, 프랑스뿐만 아니라 영국·독일 등 여러 국가의 한국 문화유산 소장 기관들과의 협업을 통해 유럽 소재 한국 문화유산의 조사·환수·활용을 위한 현지 거점 역할을 종합적으로 수행하게 된다.

그간 국외재단이 운영하는 해외 거점 사무소는 일본과 미국에만 있었고(각각 2013년, 2016년 설치), 한국 문화유산이 다수 소재한 유럽에서도 최근 한국 문화와 한국학에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 현지 거점 마련의 필요성이 꾸준히 제기되어 왔다.

프랑스 파리는 유네스코 본부와 프랑스국립도서관, 국립기메동양박물관 등 주요 한국 문화유산 소장기관이 소재한 곳으로, 이번 국외재단의 유럽 거점 마련을 통해 현지 기관과의 협력관계 구축과 문화유산 관련 국제적 현안 대응 등이 보다 용이해질 것으로 기대된다.

국가유산청과 국외재단은 앞으로도 유럽 거점을 기반으로 현지 협력망을 보다 촘촘히 구축하고, 소중한 한국 문화유산이 해외 현지에서 보다 온전히 보존·활용되고, 국내로 환수될 수 있도록 최선을 다할 계획이다.

The Korea Heritage Service (Administrator: Choi Eung-Chon), in collaboration with the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation (Chair: Kim Junghee; hereafter the OKCHF), will establish a European office in Paris to strengthen the research and utilization of Korean cultural heritage housed in Europe.

The European office of the OKCHF will commence operations starting with an opening ceremony in France on September 17. Starting in October this year, it will be conducting surveys and research on old Korean maps held at the Biblioth？que nationale de France. In addition, the office will serve as a comprehensive local base for the research and utilization of Korean cultural heritage in collaboration with institutions holding such heritage in France and in other countries including the United Kingdom and Germany.

The OKCHF also operates overseas offices in Japan and the United States (established in 2013 and 2016, respectively). Given the numerous Korean cultural heritage items housed in Europe and the growing interest in Korean culture and Korean studies in the region, the need for a local hub in Europe has been consistently recognized.

Paris is home to UNESCO headquarters as well as major institutions holding Korean cultural heritage such as the Biblioth？que nationale de France, and the Mus？e Guimet. The establishment of the European office of the OKCHF is expected to boost the cooperative relationships with these local institutions and allow more effective responses to international issues related to cultural heritage.

Through their new European hub, the Korea Heritage Service and the OKCHF will continue to strengthen the local cooperative network and their efforts to ensure that precious Korean cultural heritage is better preserved, utilized overseas, and repatriated to Korea when needed.
